Daniel Meadows: Free Photographic Omnibus - Now and Then Portraits 1974 and 1995–2000
Softcover | 14 X 20 cm | 36 pp
Café Royal Books | 2024
In the 1990s, following the exhibition National Portraits, Photographs from the 1970s by Daniel Meadows (curated by Val Williams), there was a revival of interest in the journey I had made around England in the Free Photographic Omnibus and I wasn't
alone in being curious about what, in the intervening decades, had unfolded in the lives of those I'd photographed. Sol decided to go looking for some of them.
The editors of regional newspapers in three of the towns where my visits had been particularly fruitful Barrow-in-Furness, Hartlepool and Southampton - helped me out. Each published a spread of the 'seventies photographs l'd made in their town, along with an invitation to anyone who recognised themselves, or indeed anyone else, in the pictures to make themselves known and to pose for my camera again. Which happened. And that's how the series published here came about. Daniel Meadows 2024
