Guy Bigland: rhythm mhtyhr

Concertina Fold | 10.5 x 0.5 x 15 cm | 12 pp

Guy Bigland | 2023

Digital Indigo Print on Mohawk Eggshell Superfine Ultrawhite 216gsm

Edition of 100

rhythm mhtyhr presents all 720 possible arrangements of the six letters of the word 'rhythm' with each of the six letters printed in a different grey tone.

The permutations are arranged according to a numerically logical order with the final one being 'mhtyhr' - rhythm in reverse - which bears a sonic resemblance to the word 'metre' - a term for pattern in poetry and music.

The concertina format allows the book to unfold so the whole piece can be seen as a single visual rhythm.

Guy Bigland works with photography, text, books, print, digital media and painting to examine the mechanics of meaning, language and systems of order. His work is held in public and private collections in the UK (including Tate, V&A and the National Poetry Library), Europe and the USA.
