Guy Bigland: Square Photographs of White Circle Paintings
Softcover | 22 x 0.6 x 15 cm | 40 pp
Guy Bigland | 2022
First edition of 100
Thirty-eight photographs of mini-roundabouts taken from the roadside. The photos have been taken from road level where the circles are seen as ellipses. The images have then been edited to make them as circular as possible.
The circles instruct motorists to observe a rule, intended to be seen rather than looked at. Although created 'uncreatively' by road painters, they can be read as outdoor public art. They present a surface patina which is the product both of the makers' techniques and the physical rigours that have been placed upon them over time.
The book features a short text on the rules and history of the mini-roundabout.
'They sit in the road like ammonites after a big night out, things from our past that somehow remain, living fossils of the road' Source magazine, Summer issue 2023
Guy Bigland works with photography, text, books, print, digital media and painting to examine the mechanics of meaning, language and systems of order. His work is held in public and private collections in the UK (including Tate, V&A and the National Poetry Library), Europe and the USA.
