Sigune Hamann: Freshers (Non-mint)

Softcover | 18.7 × 26.5 cm | 32 pp

The Everyday Press | 2019 | 9781912458066

Edition of 750 copies

Sigune Hamann's work combines experimental approaches in photography, video, and sound with cross-disciplinary inquiry. She explores how time, perception, and attention shape the construction and experience of images through interventions and installations.

Freshers was the first project of Hamann’s residency working with perception and attention in Experimental Psychology at Oxford University in collaboration with neuroscientist Prof Kia Nobre and her students. Hamann explores how experimental treatment, physical handling and viewing of images test and shift perception of ourselves relating to others.

In Freshers Hamann splits images and assembles them within the gatefold structure of the book to enable a playful engagement and a surprising array of permutational arrangements and interchanging narratives.

The project ran workshops with a photo-based record of students meeting, one to one, on their first college day at Oxford University, Waseda University, Tokyo and Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London between 2016 and 2018. Freshers exists both as an artist book and as a wall installation of 100 photographs.

Sigune Hamann is an artist working in London since 1993. She is Reader in Art and Media Practice at the University of the Arts, Camberwell College of Arts London.
