Simon Cutts: Pyclets
Simon Cutts
Hardcover | 15 x 1 x 14.7 cm | 40 pp
Coracle | 2026 | 978096630686
Pyclets are round savoury griddle cakes, made with flour, yeast and buttermilk, not dissimilar from crumpets and the kind of oatcake made in other parts of midlands Britain.
They were sold from mobile carts in the gloriously gloomy entrance to the Derby Guildhall Covered Market of the author's childhood, their yeasty smell filling the empty, open corridors.
In Pyclets Simon Cutts offers a succession of returned-to quotations harboured over many years. Words from Mallarmé, Cage, Freud, Schoenberg and Stevie Smith among others, are interspersed with the authors own - all masquerading under the tiny fermented cakes of Cutts' home town. The cover emboss and multiple endpapers endorse the random connections between them.
